“A Bright Idea”
Mark Rossi, President of Avanti Restaurant Solutions, with Monica Sing, IB art student at
Mira Loma High School

Monica writes:
What’s in an IPod? A hardrive, a battery and a maze of flashy appendages and wires. Yet, its deceptively simple design pleased and revolutionized the music industry. On August 25, 2008, I was given the unique opportunity to glimpse into the world of technology with local Sacramento business owner, Mark Rossi in a competition of creativity, artistic skill and recycled objects. Mr. Rossi and I centered our piece around the microcosm of the IPod while celebrating human innovation with the symbols of sound and technology.
About me….As an IB senior at Mira Loma High School, I have a hopeful outlook in the future for becoming a surgeon or pediatrician. In the fall, I plan to apply to various UC’s, Washington University, Rice and Brown.

“My Fair Lady”
Nancy Brodovsky, Community Leader, with Liz Marta, IB art student at Mira Loma High School

Liz writes:
When I went into this project, I did not have a concrete idea of what I was going to create. However, with the assistance of my partner, the form of the piece came together quickly. Because we both enjoyed the movie “My Fair Lady” and the hats worn in the film, we decided on forming a large extravagant hat. After that the decision for the sculpture came together quickly.
About me… As an IB senior at Mira Loma High School, I will continue art as a hobby. I hope to go to medical school.

“Grandfather Clock”
Jan Scully, Sacramento County District Attorney, with Leila Block, IB art student at Mira Loma
High School

Lelie writes:
It’s a grandfather clock! My partner and I collaborated to create this clock and we had so much fun in the process, that we lost track of time. At first we had no idea what we were going to make, and then while looking through glass bottles I had a vision…. Of a ship in a bottle, but that was an unrealistic vision. So we made the clock instead.
About me… As an IB senior at Mira Loma High school, I want to live in far away lands and play my trumpet.

“D.T.”
Jack Rozance, Physician-in-Chief of Kaiser Permanente, with Shelby Smith, IB art student at
Mira Loma High School
Shelby writes:
The concept for the D.T. was to create an updated version of a totem pole, which are usually associated with ancient cultures. The D.T. also represents how every person is entangled in this “electronic age” within the creation process. The piece became much less hard-edged than I imaged, but became a study in hard and soft.
About me… As an IB senior at Mira Loma, I would like to major in art history and classical civilizations and attend both law school and medical school to become a lawyer and a surgeon.

“It Means What You Want It To”
Jeff Hallsten, CEO of Hallsten Corporation, with Paige Logsdon, IB art student at Mira Loma
High School
Paige writes:
I didn’t have a clear idea then I started. I tried to sketching ideas but none came to fruition. I needed to get a base going, so I started with a trash can. Gradually it took on a vague appearance of a fish, and we just went with it. My partner was very helpful, cutting out plastic and painting. I intended to have maybe two more legs, but we ran out of time. I love working big. The color scheme was me having fun with the many spray paint colors we had. I wish the eye was bigger. It means what you want it to; I am not going to put words in your mouth.
About me…As an IB Visual Art senior at Mira Loma, I’m going to Alaska with Kate and we will get our degrees and also hold jobs. Maybe then focus on art.

“Alien #5”
Michele Wong, CEO of Synergex International Corporation, with Kate Owens, IB art student at
Mira Loma High School
Kate writes:
Going into the project I had no preconceived idea of what I was going to do. After simply delving into the material we had an alien like body and used that as a spring board for the rest of the sculpture. And yes, it is very reminiscent of “E.T. ..phone home,” however the intention was more a message regarding progress and sometimes “backwards” progression of technology.
About me.. As an IB senior at Mira Loma, I plan on applying to college in November. I hope to go to college at San Francisco State or the University of Alaska to study biology and hopefully get my Masters in Wildlife Biology eventually.

“STARS Child”
Steve Gendahl, CEO of Grendahl Construction, with Pepper Youngs, IB art student at Mira Loma High School
Pepper writes:
"I went into this event with no preconceived idea of what I wanted to create so that I could focus more on the collaborative aspect of the work. My partner, Steve, came ready to go with a well-developed concept for us to work with, so we used the recycled pieces he brought along with various other found objects to create a personified representation of the STARS program. STARS, supports Science, Technology and the Arts so the child wields a telescope and classic IPod as he gazes into the night sky with an expectant smile across his face. I think that Steve and I created a really fun piece, and the whole experience was very enjoyable."
About me... As an IB senior at Mira Loma I have always loved art and spend a lot of my time drawing, painting and sculpting. I also love being outdoors and spending time with friends and after high school I hope to attend college with a major in fine arts and a minor in environmental science.
